Service Area
Description of the Region
Geographically, the Northern Neck Middle Peninsula Telehealth Consortium service region is long and narrow. As part of Virginia’s Tidewater region, forested upland, rolling farmland, wetlands, and cliffs characterize the area. Gullies and small creeks that drain into the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers lace the terrain.
Agriculture, lumber, fishing (and other water-related industry), and tourism comprise the important sources of regional income.
The northern boundary is the Potomac River; the southern boundary is the North Anna, Pamunkey and York River chain. The eastern boundary is the Chesapeake Bay, while two more rural counties (King George and Caroline) form the western boundary.
Two bridges connect the southern counties in the Middle Peninsula to main highways, and to the Northern Neck counties. Two-lane roads predominate throughout most of the region, and they are used by tourists, logging, construction, farming trucks and equipment.
